DeepSeek Blocks By Italy Gov Over Data Privacy Concerns
Italy's data protection authority has taken decisive action by blocking access to the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek. This move comes after the developers of the chatbot did not provide adequate information regarding their data collection practices or clarify whether user data is stored on servers located in China. According to a report by Reuters, as of Wednesday, DeepSeek was unavailable for download on both the Apple and Google app stores in Italy. This occurred just one day after the Garante, Italy’s data protection agency, requested clarification on how DeepSeek handles personal data.
The Garante sought detailed information about what types of personal data are collected, the sources of this data, the purposes for its collection, the legal grounds for its use, and the specifics regarding its storage location. The agency emphasized that this measure aims to safeguard the personal data of Italian users. However, the response from the Chinese companies providing the chatbot services was deemed "totally insufficient," prompting the Garante to act.
Moreover, the authority indicated that this decision would take effect immediately and has also launched a formal investigation into the matter. The commitment to protecting user data is paramount, and this situation highlights the ongoing need for transparency and accountability in the realm of technology and data usage.
